College Football – Nebraska Cornhuskers offseason review

College football talk has it that there is a possibiilty Cornhusker Jared Crick might be leaving next year although he will just be a junior. As it stands now Nebraska has 24 juniors and 25 seniors on the roster this year. Losing 25 seniors, all at one time, is more than a loss.

Coach Bo Pelini has been successful in picking up some junior college transfers along the way. In fact, these account for some of the 49 players. Pelini’s players are definitely changing the dynamics of his team. The real impact will come about in 2011 and after.

The Husker’s blackshirt defense will most likely feel the affect of the departure of Ndamukong Suh. Some early reviews have it that the Huskers have some soon-to-be stars up front. Aside from the loss of Suh there will also be the absence of Larry Asante and Matt O’Hanlon who have both moved on. Also, the loss of Phil Dillard is going to leave a big hole in the roster. It appears that his replacements will be mostly underclassmen.

The upper classmen are not many in number. There are three juniors or seniors listed as former walk-ons. Thomas Grove, a senior, and lower-classmen Mathew May and Matt Holt have their work cut out for them. Coach Ekeler, who is not your laid back kind of guy, will have few linebackers over age 21. Still, they are talented and undoubtedly will be coached to the tee. The Nebraska fans, strong as they are, will closely watch the new crop of linebackers.
