NCAA College Football: Conference realignment update
Big 12 conference officials met this week to discuss the future of the league after the defections of both the Colorado Buffaloes and the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the Pac–10 and Big 10 conferences, respectively. President Dan Beebe quick moved to squash rumors regarding a potential expansion of his own conference, at least in the near future, adding there is “no interest in expansion.”
The league has been under siege by the Pac 10, Big 10, SEC and even the Mountain West as speculators have tried to determine which teams were leaving and whether the conference would eventually implode on itself.
With at least one of the league heavyweights defecting to a rival, other groups have tried to swoop in as well in order to make the best play possible for their group. A hot new rumor had Texas Cowboys owner (and Arkansas Razorback) Jerry Jones trying to sell the conference on the idea of adding both Arkansas and Notre Dame.
However, neither team was on the docket for the meetings, nor was there any announcement made concerning scheduling and possible realignment of the remaining teams. Beebe was unwavering in his support of the current set up and sounded positive about the future of the league.
He sounded committed to the school that remained, affirming his desire for the 10 team model, stating that it would still be providing the types of experiences that most benefited the student athletes.
