NCAA College Football: USC Appeals Sanctions
So is anyone else as un-surprised as I am that the USC football program has been hit with NCAA sanctions? Over the last several years the NCAA has tried to impose sterner and more penalizing sanctions in the hope of deterring other schools from making similar mistakes, and yet the names of major universities showing up on the list of affected schools continues to be a “who’s who” of college football.
As expected, USC has appealed these sanctions, which include a 2 year ban on post-season participation and the loss of 10 scholarships for the football program, but their chances in appeal don’t appear to be good. And what motivation is there for the NCAA’s infractions review committee, which doesn’t meet again until after the beginning of the upcoming season, to be moved by any appeal anyway?
The problem is that by the time these sanctions are issued, the student athletes involved are typically out of school, and in some cases now making millions in the NFL. Coaches from successful programs can usually find themselves onto another staff as well; since it’s long been know in this country that everyone loves a winner.
Until these sanctions begin affecting the individuals who were directly involved, whether that’s by legal action, by fines, or possibly even suspensions at the NFL level, the lure of easy money and flashy cars will continue to entice young men into doing the wrong thing when the opportunity presents itself.
