First, head coach Urban Meyer was stepping down as head coach of the University of Florida’s football program. Then, he decided to stay on as an advisor for the football. Now, Urban Meyer has decided that he will continue to be the head coach of Florida, albeit in a reduced role. So, if you’re not confused yet, let’s take a look at some of the other offseason news for Florida that made headlines.

Probably the most newsworthy piece of information is the fact that Tim Tebow will no longer be behind center for the football team. Tebow, one of the most ballyhooed players in the history of collegiate football, ran out of eligibility and will now focus on his professional career. Meyer said as recently as Monday that the Gators may go with a two quarterback system, splitting time between John Brantley and true freshman Trey Burton.

The Gators also got a new defensive coordinator when they hired Teryl Austin away from his job as an assistant with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. Austin will inherit a defense that loses not only one of the ILBs in the country (Brandon Spikes) but also two of the better DBs in the country (CB Joe Haden and S Major Wright).

Those aren’t the only players that won’t be suiting up for Florida this fall, as C Maurkice Pouncey and TE Aaron Hernandez have entered their names into the NFL Draft. Pouncey is considered to be the top center in this year’s Draft while Hernandez is one of the top tight ends and is expected to be drafted in the first two rounds.

It will be an interesting season for the Florida football program, as they try to recover from a tumultuous offseason that saw them lose most of their big playmakers. Head coach Urban Meyer will have his work cut out for him, so it will remain to be seen just how “easy” he takes it this season.

This offseason, the Big East has welcomed three new head football coaches to the conference. In early December, the University of Louisville hired Charlie Strong. As far as head coaching goes, Strong has one game under his belt: a 2004 loss in the Peach Bowl as the interim head coach for Florida. Regardless, he has a reputation as a guy who can build a strong defensive squad.

Louisville has had little success since coming to the Big East in 2007, but Strong may be the guy to eventually turn this program around.

Later in December, the University of Cincinnati selected Butch Jones as their new head coach. Jones’ previous experience as a head coach consists of three years leading Central Michigan, which won their conference twice and made it to a bowl game in all three seasons. Jones had two years of Big East experience as a WR coach for very successful West Virginia teams. He will take over for arguably the best program in the Big East, coming off of a 13-1 season. Since he had similar success at Central Michigan, Cincinnati fans should look forward to more of the same.

Finally, the last coach added to the Big East was Skip Holtz, former Connecticut and East Carolina head coach. In both of those jobs, he improved the school throughout his tenure and left after first place finishes. USF has been a mediocre team in the Big East, but Holtz looks to be the right man for the job and won’t make your football betting any easier.

Carroll had been coaching at USC for many years and he will be missed both on campus and on the field.

Another blow for the Trojans was the firing of line coach Pat Ruel. The Trojans are going to have some rebuilding to do to get their staffing back to where it needs to be.

Former Arizona Wildcats offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes accepted the head coaching job at Louisiana Tech. The Wildcats were very surprised with the announcement that he was leaving the team and had no idea he was even scouting around for a new job.

Arizona coach Mike Stoops needed to add two new coordinators to his roster. The Defensive Coordinator was filled by Mark Stoops (Mike’s brother). He was with Florida State previously.

Bill Moos will take the job offfered to him with the Washington State Cougars. This will prove to be a great move for both him as well as the university. With his training and credibility the team should go far, could they be in the running for the Pac-10 Championship this year?

With so many changes throughout the Pac-10 this season this will prove to be an interesting season and be sure to check out these teams do in their sports picks reviews.

Fans of Big 12 football who enjoyed an exciting end to the 2009 season can expect an interesting 2010.

Less than a month into the new year one major coaching change has occurred in Lubbock, Texas. The controversial firing of Texas Tech Aggies coach Mike Leach led to the hiring of SEC exile Tommy Tubbervile.

And after Mark Mangino’s firing, first year coach, and former Husker, Turner Gill will work to keep the Kansas Jayhawks from collapsing.

Texas Longhorn fans can take comfort in yet another Top 5 recruiting class. Although the Longhorns lost NCAA record-holder Colt McCoy, they were able to see a preview of next year’s QB in Garrett Gilbert. Texas is an early favorite to compete with Oklahoma for the South title.

Texas A&M could be a surprise this year in the South. Oklahoma State should also compete well.

In the North division, coach Bo Pelini has his Nebraska Cornhuskers poised to return to national significance. On defense, the Huskers lose defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to the draft but will return most starters from last year’s strong defensive unit.

Also in the North, Bill Snyder will continue his attempt to save a sinking ship in Kansas State. Iowa State could become a dark horse candidate to compete for the North title. Paul Rhodes led the Cyclones to a strong finish in 2009.

In 2010 Colorado, Missouri, Baylor will all be working to find their identity after disappointing seasons.

The game started out perfectly for Texas Longhorns. After holding the Alabama Crimson Tide to what appeared to be a three and out, Alabama’s punter threw a pass on a fake punt play. The pass was intercepted. It was a questionable call for the normally conservative Alabama coach, Nick Saban.

The joy of Texas’s ideal start was short lived. On their ensuing possession, the all time winningest college quarterback, Colt McCoy, had to leave the game after taking a devastating hit to his shoulder. McCoy would not return. He was replaced by the inexperienced freshman quarterback Garret Gilbert.

After a goal line stand, Alabama was able to hold Texas to a field goal. Texas immediately made another huge play as they recovered their short kick off. Again, Alabama was able to hold the Texas offense to a field goal.

Alabama then let their running game, led by Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram take over. Ingram, the games offensive MVP, finished with 116 yards and two touchdowns. Alabama looked poised to head into half time with a 17-6 advantage when Marcell Dareus picked off an attempted shuttle pass and rumbled into the endzone for a touchdown.

Texas’s offense sprung to life in the second half as Gilbert seemed to be gaining confidence on every play. Texas got to within three points of Alabama. Then the Alabama defense made another huge play. With 3:02 left in the game, linebacker Eryk Anders hit Gilbert on his blindside and forced a fumble. Snatching back momentum and effectively sealing an Alabama Championship.
