Conference USA Preview: Rice

Two years ago, Sam McGuffie filled computer screens everywhere with highlight-reel moves that left many a college coach salivating to get him on their campus.

The University of Michigan ended up winning the hotly contested recruiting battle for McGuffie, but two years later, it is Rice that will be able to reap the benefits that a player like McGuffie can provide. McGuffie transferred from the University of Michigan to be closer to home, and he is one of the lone bright spots for a Rice team that finished last season with an abysmal 2-10 record.

It will be interesting to see just how new offensive coordinator David Beaty will utilize McGuffie in the Owls’ high-tempo offense.

Beaty will also get two new QB transfers to play with during this offseason as Alabama transfer Nick Fanuzzi and Miami transfer Taylor Cook battle it out to crack the starting lineup.

Along with McGuffie, it is highly likely that Rice’s offense will be vastly improved over last season, especially in rushing offense (Rice finished 104th in the NCAA rushing offense.
